You need to install WMVideo Decoder in Resident Evil 3

When you start Resident Evil 3 on a Windows 10 device, the following WMVideo Decoder message box may appear:

CAPCOM InstallerMessage
You need to install ” VIDEO CODEC : WMVideo Decoder” to start the game

You may tick the checkbox “I accept the above message” and click Exit, but the game won’t start

There are several possible solutions for the WMVideo Decoder problem in RE3. And unfortunately, it differs per computer whether the solution is sufficient, or whether you need to make more adjustments.
Below I have put the solutions together. At the top is the most likely solution. If it doesn’t work, go to the next solution, and so on.

Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack Basic

K-Lite Codec Pack Basic contains all codecs necessary to play nearly all types of video. You don’t need to install the full or advanced pack. Basic is enough. The codec for WMVideo is included, so after this step, the Resident Evil 3 error is likely fixed.

To install K-Lite Codec Pack Basic, do the following:

1. Go to https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_basic.htm
2. Click Server 1, or Server 2, to download the EXE file.
3. Double-click the installer file to install K-Lite Codec Pack Basic.
4. Try to run the Resident Evil 3 game.

Enable Legacy Components and DirectPlay

Windows 10 has an option to install legacy components. You sometimes need these if you want to play older, outdated games on your new Windows 10 PC. These Legacy Components are not installed by default, as well as Directplay. To install the Legacy Components, do the following:

1. Open Control Panel and go to Programs and Features
2. Click Turn Windows features on or off
3. A small window titled Windows Features will appear. Scroll down to Legacy Components.

Install Media Feature Pack for Windows 10 N

In case you have Windows 10 N installed, you may need to download and install the Media Feature Pack. This pack is installed in Windows 10 by default but is not included in the N version due to legal issues. To install the Media Feature Pack, follow these steps:

1. Download Media Feature Pack from this site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53356
2. Install the Media Feature Pack
3. Reboot your computer
4. Try to run the Resident Evil 3 game.
