Thumbs.db file on Desktop

A collegue asked me last week about a file named Thumbs.db on his desktop. He was wondering what is was and whether he could permanently delete it.

The answer: Yes, you can delete it safely. However, it will return every time you place an image on your desktop. Thumbs.db manages all small thumbnails of images that are located in the particular folder. In this case: Desktop.

One way to solve this, is to set hidden files to remain hidden. To do so:

  1. Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E)
  2. Browse to your Desktop folder
  3. Go to View > Options on the toolbar. Select the “view” tab and choose “Don’t show hidden files, folders or drives”
