Exchange Management Console very slow at startup and when opening Configuration windows

In Exchange 2010 you may experience a less responsive Exchange Management Console (EMC). There are a few settings that may improve the speed of the EMC. Below are some actions and/or changes that you can do to resolve the issue.

  1. If your EMC needs more than 20 seconds to start, try disabling the option "Check for Server Certificate Revocation". You can find this option when you open Internet Explorer -> Advanced. Uncheck "Check for Server Certificate Revocation"
  2. If you have only a few GB of RAM in your Exchange server, you should really add some more. 8 GB should be enough for a test environment, but for production, you should really have 16GB or more.
  3. If your Recipients list takes long to load, modify the Maximum Number of Recipients to Display. You can find this option in the Actions pane while viewing Recipient Configuration –> Mailbox
  4. If you can’t even connect to Exchange, and the error message you get is something like  "Active Directory error 0x51 ….The LDAP server is unavailable…", try to delete the EMC configuration file. TO do so, close the EMC, navigate to "C:\users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC\Exchange Management Console\” , and delete the config file.

If, after these changes, your EMC is still slow, you should check the connection to your domain controllers. Exchange 2010 relies heavily on Active Directory. As Richard Roddy says in this article, check whether the EnableTCPA setting exists in your registry under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters . If so, set it to 0 (disabling)
