Error 0x800f0982 during Windows Update Windows 10 easy fix

Another day in the life of a Sysadmin: Error 0x800f0982 in Windows Update. In this particular case, it was update 2019-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1809 (KB4489899). But actually, it could’ve been any update.

Error 0x800f0982 windows update

Fix 0x800f0982

Error 0x800f0982 stands for PSFX_E_MATCHING_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND and indicates some missing components related to language packs. Investigation led me to only 2 reasonable solutions:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall any additional language pack
    1. Click Start -> select Settings > Time & Language > Language
      Under Preferred languages, select the language you want to remove, and then click Remove.
    2. Click Start -> select Settings > Time & Language > Language
      Choose a language from the Add a language list under Preferred languages, and then select Options.
      Click Download.
    3. Now, check for updates again and install all available updates. Updates should now install without errors.
  2. In case above’s steps didn’t work, your best bet is to use Windows Restore to go back to a previous restore point
