Blank print preview and Blank printed documents in Internet Explorer 7 and 8

In certain environments, the problem may occur that you cannot print web pages from Internet Explorer 7 or 8. When you open a Print Preview, or when you print the web page, you get a blank page.

Problem:
print previews and prints are blank from Internet Explorer 7 or 8

Cause:
– The folder C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\ is missing
– Inappropriate permissions are set to C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\

Solution:
First, you should verify the following folder is present:
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\  (where username is the account name you’re logged on with).
If the folder Low does not exist, create it.

Then, you should set appropriate permissions to the folder. To do so, open a command prompt with administrative permissions (click the Windows Orb / Start Button, type CMD in the search bar, then right click on Command Prompt and click “Run as administrator”). In the command prompt, type the following and press Enter:
ICACLS C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\Low\ /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low

Now you should be able to print web pages again.

Unlike what other website say, you do NOT have to restart your pc. In fact, you don’t even have to restart your browser.

Will this work in windows 7 ? I do not see any of the settings above listed in windows 7

Yes it will work in win7, the reason you can’t see the folders is because they are set to hidden. you need to check show hidden files and folders first. in win 7 go to organize ->folder and search options -> view -> check show hidden files……….

Hi, I found your post on printing blank webpages and found that the solution you found worked. However within the path in the user folder there was an addtional numbered folder within the temp folder, 88 in my case. I added this in and it works great. however on a different machine the folder number is 246, any ideas what this numbered folder represents?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

craig

found out the number refers to the session id

I perfomed the actions proposed but it failed processing 1 files. What can be done to fix it?

Thanks a lot! I would like to share a thing. In the command line you asked to add username. But in my case username consists of initials & .(dots) hence the command was not executing. Therefore I looked at the bottom of the blank print preview of IE9 & entered that path. & it worked! Thanks a lot once again!!

I have a the same problem but different situation. The users that can’t print are on terminal servers. So every time they log in there’s a different ….\temp\XX\Low where xx is a number. It’s different every time they log in so how do I fix this on a more permanent basis. This is getting to be such a pain is there not a real fix from Microsoft? I cannot be typing this all day when users can’t print. Appreciate any help.

If you see my reply below the numbered folder XX corresponds to the session id of the user. this is no use however as this will change each time the user logs off. I have recently found (after a lot of messing about) a relatively simple way around this. Setting the /temp folder with low integrity allows internet explorer to write the /XX/Low folder in to the temp directory which should allow the user to print. it has worked for me and I am currently testing it in our terminal server environment. I currently have a batch file running on… Read more »

craig, thank you…this sounds like it would work. I will give it a try, but you would think MS should have a fix by now.

If I remember correctly I didnt have to create any new folders, all I did was apply the low integrity command and then go to print preview and the page would display. if you go to print preview and the page is blank it will display the file path for the preview in the footer. You can test the integrity cpmmand by using that path for an individual user. In my ICALCS command I have used the varialble %USERPROFILE% so it would work for any user as each users profile will be the same. What is the path of the… Read more »

Hi , when i try the command prompt it is coming up INVALID PARAMETER (OI)(CI)low ?

Duane

For Terminal Services/Citrix Xenapp:

create a login script with the following:

MD %temp%\low
ICACLS %temp%\low /setintegritylevel (OI)(CI)low

Just set this up on our new XenApp 6.5 environment, and it worked fine. The %temp% environment variable is already populated with the session number.

Hello!
I having similar problem with my IE8. Whether I try to preview web-page or print it, I can see only blanked preview pages. This article proposes creating new folder “Low” in the following directory: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Temp\
My issue is that I don’t have or can’t see the “Users” folder. Instead of that I have two different folders “Temp” and “TEMP” in C:\ directory.
Please, give me any suggestions how to fix it.
