5 effective ways to improve Windows 10 performance

You can increase your Windows 10 performance by using countless tips and tricks. But only a handful are really worth it. Do you really want to waste time making small improvements? They cost you hours of work and only provide microsecond gains on system performance.
In this post, you will read the 5 most efficient ways to speed up your PC. In just 10 minutes you have a noticeably faster PC.

Set your Power Settings to Best Performance

Windows 10 has built-in power plans. These ensure that your PC uses less power. But at the same time, they also cause your PC to run slower. As long as you work on a desktop or work on a laptop that is connected to the mains, you can increase the performance to Best Performance / High Performance.

To increase performance on a laptop:

  1. Click on the battery at the bottom right.
  2. Move the bar to the right to Best Performance.

To increase performance on a desktop:

  1. From the Start menu, open the Control Panel App.
  2. Click Power Options.
  3. Choose High Performance.

Disable programs that run on startup

The more applications you install, the greater the chance that those applications will also consume memory when you start your PC. Many software vendors abuse this hidden starting of services to, for example, monitor your PC use, or to be able to start their own application faster (such as Adobe Speed Launcher).

You can set the automatic setting of applications in the Task Manager. You can start Task Manager with the key combination CTRL-ALT-ESC. But you can also right-click on your taskbar (bottom bar) and choose Task Manager.

open task manager
Go to the Startup tab. If the Task Manager launches as a compact app with no tabs, click “More details” at the bottom of the window
As you can see in my example below, the Startup Impact of the ZwiftLauncher application is “high”. This means that it has a lot of impact on my system performance. I, therefore, choose to disable the application at startup. This is a safe way to speed up your PC. I recommend you to review the list yourself and disable applications that have a Medium or High impact. You can also disable applications with a low impact.

Stop Onedrive sync. Temporarily.

Microsoft’s Onedrive is one of the best ways to securely store your files in the cloud today. However, there is one drawback: as soon as a synchronization takes place, the application takes up a huge amount of resources. Very annoying if you have to meet a deadline, or if you are gaming. In those cases you can temporarily pause the Onedrive Sync.

Follow these steps to pause Onedrive Sync:

  1. Click on the Onedrive icon at the bottom right.
  2. Click … More.
  3. Click Pause Syncing.
  4. Choose the duration of the Pause.

Scan your PC for malware

It will surprise you, but with almost all my acquaintances and friends who ask me to check the PC, I find malware, bloatware or viruses. Some malware doesn’t even have to be malicious to cause a lot of annoyance. An example of this is the “antivirus software” Segurazo.
Take no risk and scan your PC with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This is a legitimate free application to scan your PC for health. You do not have to buy this product. That is only interesting if you want to scan in realtime, but I don’t think that’s necessary.

Uninstall applications you don’t use to increase Windows 10 performance

Usually, a new device comes with Windows 10 and lots of needless apps. Or maybe you have installed applications in the past just for testing purposes but you have forgotten to uninstall them. Now is the time to do. It can increase your system performance incredibly.

  1. Open Settings from the Start menu.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the app you want to remove.
  5. Click the Uninstall button.
